About Department
Post Graduate Department of Economics in SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai was established in 1972. Under the able leadership of Prof. S K G Sundaram and Prof. Vibhuti Patel, each for more than a decade, the department has contributed towards Human Development Reports of Mumbai and Maharashtra state, gender budgeting, international trade, labour economics, gender and Information technology, economic thoughts of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, development of rural cooperative banks in Maharashtra etc. Till 31-01-2018 Prof Veena Devasthali was the HOD. Currently the Department is headed by Prof. Ruby Ojha.

- To introduce the students to the advanced theories in economics.
- To equip students with analytical tools of economics to understand the current economic reality with perspective of problem solving.
- To introduce the tools of empirical analysis.
- To offer a wide range of courses enabling the students in their pursuit of specialization – e.g. economics of labour, industry, gender, social & physical infrastructure etc.
- To organise various curricular and co-curricular academic programmes.
To produce this knowledge for solving the problems of the country with special focus on Social justice, Distributive justice and Gender justice.
