About Department

SNDT Women’s University, Pune Campus comprises of six independent institutions including the Department of Post Graduate Studies and Research (PGSR). Under the academic framework of the PGSR, eight specialized departments are established, namely: Geography, Marathi, Hindi, Economics, Psychology, Visual Arts, Music and Commerce.

The Post Graduate Department of Geography at the Pune Campus established in 1986 and holds a distinctive position as the sole department offering high-quality education in a technically intensive and scientifically grounded discipline in the vernacular language of Maharashtra. In 2003, the department introduced a self-financed M.Phil. program, further expanding its academic offerings.

Currently, the M.A. Geography program is structured over four semesters, comprising 23 major and elective courses, totalling 88 credits over two years. This program is structured to provide a blend of theoretical knowledge and applied learning. Each semester integrates a practical component alongside a research-focused course, such as Research Methodology, On-the-Job Training (OJT), Internship, and a Research Project. The program emphasizes hands-on learning in various domains of geographical studies while simultaneously building a strong foundation in research practices and analytical thinking. The curriculum is designed to equip students with the necessary skills for academic inquiry and professional application in the field of geography. The program attracts aspiring students from across India who seek to engage in a rigorous and regionally relevant academic environment.

Our primary goal is to equip students with a strong foundational understanding of geographical concepts and their interdisciplinary applications. We aim to develop a well-rounded perspective by sensitizing students to both the core principles of Geography and its various specialized branches, preparing them to engage meaningfully with real-world environmental and spatial challenges.

A Four-Pillar Approach

The department is committed to holistic development across four key areas:

A. Academics | B. Training | C. Research | D. Administration

A. Academic: We are focused on expanding our academic offerings by introducing new courses with specializations in both Physical and Human Geography. The department also plans to launch Diploma and Degree programs in GIS and Remote Sensing, emphasizing practical, application-based learning. These additions will not only deepen students' subject expertise but also significantly enhance their career opportunities in rapidly growing geographic and geospatial sectors.

B. Training: In response to increasing environmental challenges, the department is committed to developing training modules for teachers, students, and researchers. These programs aim to build capacity in addressing issues such as environmental degradation. We also seek to strengthen collaborations with professional agencies to facilitate internships and job placements, ensuring students are industry-ready upon graduation.

C. Research: We aim to foster a research-driven academic environment by enhancing our library and computer laboratory facilities, particularly in areas related to GIS, Remote Sensing, and Advanced Statistical Analysis. Future plans include establishing a well-equipped laboratory with state-of-the-art surveying instruments, GIS software, and digital imagery, providing students and researchers access to cutting-edge tools and resources to support high-quality academic inquiry.

D. Administrative: To maintain excellence in teaching and academic support, the department seeks to strengthen its administrative and teaching infrastructure.
