On 24th August,
2016 Visva Gujarati divas, which is also a
birthday of legendary poet and social
reformer, Veer Narmad was celebrated by
Gujarati Department. Hon. Vice Chancellor,
Prof. Shashikal Wanjari who in her
Presidential Address praised Maharshi
Karve’s vision of promoting higher education
in regional languages such as Marathi and
Gujarati along with English and Hindi. Prof.
Vibhuti Patel, In-charge Head of Gujarati
Dept. narrated a glorious history of
development of Gujarati language over last
1000 years and landmark contribution of
Ancient, Medieval, Modern, Gandhian and post
Gandhian, post-modern, Dalit and feminist
literature in Gujarati. Dr. Darshana Oza,
Associate Professor of Gujarati Dept.
profiled 65 years of the impressive history
of Gujarati Dept. of SNDTWU (1951-2016) in
terms of contributions of luminaries who
headed the dept. and brought accolades for
the dept. thro’ their research, teaching,
publications of literary works that resulted
in the Dpet. Geeting prestigious Department
Research Scheme grant of Rs. 40 lakhs from
the University Grants Commission (UGC).Shri.

Gujarati Dept. beautifully ancored the
event.
Panelist invited to discuss importance of
Gujarati language and literature were
luminaries Dr. Dinkarbhai joshi, Dr. Nalinee
Madgaonkar, Shri. Hiren Mehta (Asst. Editor,
Chitralekha) and poet Shri. Sanjay Pandya.
