There is a range of interesting career opportunities in different types of libraries. The libraries of educational institutions such as universities, colleges, polytechnics and schools have always needed library professionals. Research institutes offer rewarding positions to library professionals whose specialisations at undergraduate and postgraduate levels match their interest profile. The business and industry sector is increasingly recognising the need for trained and skilled personnel to handle information activities and challenging positions are available in the corporate sector. Media organisations (e.g. newspapers, magazines, and television companies), professional associations and non-government and voluntary organisations have in recent times been recruiting library/information professionals to manage their information handling activities.

Unique and challenging opportunities are opening in non-traditional library settings. Since the knowledge and skills of information professionals are applicable to a wide range of activities and are not confined to use within a library building, today’s information professional may work in many different environments. Information technology is creating new opportunities in designing and administering electronic databases and retrieving information from databases held at remote sites over national and international networks. The overwhelming abundance of information has created a need for expertise in selecting, analysing, consolidating and repackaging information and presenting it for particular target groups in the most appropriate manner. The librarian is also recognised as Knowledge manager and important member of the consulting team in Designing print and electronic information products. They are recently recruited for creating digital libraries and also building institutional repositories.
