The Department of Music was established in Pune campus of SNDT University in 1976. Veteran teachers like Dr. Sunita Khadilkar, Dr. Veena Sahastrabudhe, Dr. Sucheta Bidkar, Dr. shobha Gurjar contributed in bringing fame to this Department. Music students all over India aspire to seek admission at this department.
'Preservation of the glorious tradition and values of Indian classical music while empowering women by training with contemporary music and technology to become successful music professionals.' is the motto of the department.
The intake capacity is 25 for M.A. Part I for vocal music and melody instruments such as harmonium, flute, violin and sitar. Batch wise training and individual attention is given. Tabla accompaniment is provided for daily lectures and practice sessions.
Talim of Ragas is carried out not as lectures on hourly basis but continued till the students achieve the skills to the performing level.
Internship program in the syllabus helps the students to achieve field experience.
