Students Trained by Pattachitra Artists from Odisha
SNDT Women’s University & SNDT College of Arts, Commerce & Science College jointly organized a National Level workshop on 'Pattachitra' Traditional Paintings. Odisha traditional artists Mr. Bamadeb Das, Kabita Maharam, Nirnpana Sahoo, Radhamani Maharana, and Pratima Mahrana led the workshop from 16 January to 19 January 2023.
Dr.Shilpa Pachpore, Eminent Artist and Art Educator was invited in the inaugural session as a resource person. She spoke about the historical, traditional and cultural background of the Patachitra art. Dr. Suresh Garud, H.O.D. of BVA shared his views on the significance of such workshops for the students during this session. Principal Dr. Vandana Sharma chaired the inaugural session and spoke about the benefits of exposure to such Indian crafts for students by sharing her past experiences.
39 students from Jr. College, BVA, and MVA departments were shortlisted to attend the workshop. The artists led an intensive workshop by briefing the student about the process and traditions of the Pattachitra art. Sculpting with paper mache and painting on palm leaves using traditional material was demonstrated. Along with this the artists also worked with the students individually helping them learn painting and sculpting. Prof. Deepak Jogdand coordinated the workshop and also helped students develop concepts for their artworks.
The workshop was conducted under the guidance of Hon'ble Vice Chancellor Dr. Ujwala Chakradeo. She also felicitated the artists on the last day of the workshop.
